18 Students of Dominicus College in Nijmegen The Netherlands Play Gamelan in Kulonprogo

JAVANESE traditional music in Indonesia, named Gamelan, is now beginning to rarely favored the younger generation. However it's proved to be attractive to tourists or foreigners from European countries. Having schedule to travel to Kulonprogo Regency, about 18 students Dominicus College in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, visited Indonesia, especially Kulonprogo Regency. What do they do on those kinds of Travel Destination agenda? It's to know and practise Gamelan.

It is on Thursday July 30, 2015, when the students being spent a week at Wild Rescue Center (WRC) Yogyakarta, take the time to visit the studio of Karawitan Lestari Budaya in Cumethuk RT 22 RW 11 Kedungsari Pengasih Kulonprogo. Not just to be a spectator, these students are even involved plays gamelan music. For some of them this is the first occasion. One of the students, Jimmy Banken, was deeply curious about the traditional gamelan music. Teens who used to play drums or percussion instruments have a different sensation when hitting the gamelan devices include Saron, Bonang, Kenong, or beating Kendhang.

"It's my first time to play the Gamelan. I'm so curious," said Jimmy, after the play gamelan in the guide of local residents in the studio which also houses Inangun Marto, Cumethuk citizen member, Tribunjogja reported, Thursday (30/7).

The delegation of Dominicus College students in the Nijmegen arrived at the studio with some of the companion of WRC Yogyakarta. They were immediately treated to a variety of traditional food and drink like coconut water that straight from the tree. But after receiving a referral from local residents gamelan performers, they finally completed the arrangement of the numbers pelog scales.

Jimmy said, with his friends in the Netherlands often play drums or other modern instruments. Therefore, the experience of playing gamelan is an incredible and fun. Moreover, before Jimmy never know directly the gamelan. He also mentioned the visit to Indonesia is very different conditions from European countries. Besides being able to learn the culture and traditional music, greeting the people of Indonesia, especially in the village was quite friendly.

Nicole Hamers, a teacher at the college in Nijmegen Dominicus, consider playing gamelan be the first experience for the students. In addition to practicing playing the gamelan, the students can also learn the local culture. The 18 Dutch students come to Yogyakarta and spent a week in the WRC, Companion of WRC Yogyakarta, Rosalia Setiawati said. They become volunteers WRC and assist in the rehabilitation of animals in the morning. Then, study Indonesian culture include to practise Gamelan at the studio.

"The activities included participating in the morning to clean the cages and farmed. Today's afternoon we playing gamelan and teaching English at a community youth here. Besides also traveled around Yogyakarta," said Rosa.
